FCL or LCL? Choosing Right in Container Shipping

The differences between FCL and LCL in container shipping, how they affect cost and transit time, and which suits which cargo.

One of the first decisions in container shipping is whether to use a whole container or part of one. FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL (Less than Container Load) are not only about volume; they also concern schedule, cost and port handling.

FCL: the container is yours

With FCL the container is reserved for your cargo alone; it does not need to be full. The goods never touch anyone else’s cargo, port handling is minimal and transit time is more predictable. 20’ and 40’ standard and 40’ high cube are the most common sizes.

LCL: the container is shared

With LCL, consignments from several shippers are consolidated into one container. For small volumes you pay per cubic metre, which keeps cost down. Consolidation and deconsolidation, however, can extend transit time.

Four criteria for the decision

  • Volume: above roughly 13–15 m³, FCL is usually more economical.
  • Schedule: for cargo with a firm delivery date, FCL predictability matters.
  • Nature of the goods: sensitive, high-value or specially packed cargo deserves its own container.
  • Port connections: inland legs at origin and destination affect total time.

Port planning from Antalya

For cargo around Antalya, the Port of Antalya as well as the Mersin and İzmir services are considered. Handling the pre- and on-carriage road legs within the same plan reduces waiting at transfer points.
